Personal Description:

I am a professional pianist with over 40 years of performing experience, having played throughout the UK and overseas at venues such as the Wigmore Hall and the Purcell Room. Work has included appearances as solo recitalist, concerto soloist, chamber musician and accompanist. I have also occasionally performed jazz and rock. I have been a lecturer at both Coventry University and London College of Music, and have undertaken masterclasses and professional development presentations for organisations such as ABRSM and EPTA. I am an ABRSM examiner and moderator and a former mentor for the CT ABRSM instrumental teachers' course. I have written two books on various aspects of piano performance (published by Routlesge) as well as a number of journal articles.

Tutoring Experience:

My piano teaching experience goes back for over 40 years and I have taught all ages and at all levels from beginner to advanced, although now I specialise in intermediate and advanced work. I have taught privately as well as in school and university settings (Coventry and Warwick) and have prepared students for grade examinations, diplomas, festival participation and public concerts but am also happy teaching those who wish only to play for personal fulfilment. I have an up-to-date DBS enhanced disclosure certificate

Tutoring Approach:

I firmly believe in a holistic approach in which the wider world of music is at the heart of the lessons, piano playing and performance being viewed within this context. My approach to technical development is primarily through relaxation and optimal use of bodily movement rather than through technical exercises although the latter may be included. I aim to treat each student as a unique individual and avoid a formulaic 'one-method-fits-all' approach, making the lessons interactive and bespoke to each student's aims and needs. I welcome anybody of any age who is playing at a Grade 4/5 level or above.
