Personal Description:

Hi I'm Jay, I was born and raised in Manchester and began playing piano aged 14. I then went on to study at Junior RNCM, completed my Undergrad at the RNCM also and am now a Masters Student. I particularly love Chamber Music and French Piano Music. In my time at the RNCM I won two 1st place prizes in the college's annual Chamber Music competitions. I was a very shy teenager and piano really helped bring me out of my shell, so I am very passionate about how much the instrument can enrich someone's life no matter the starting age.

Outside of piano I'm interested in languages and can speak Spanish and at the moment I am learning French. I'm easy going, responsible and like to have a laugh.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a private teacher for 2 years in which I have taught absolute beginners including children, teenagers or adults. I have completed placements at tuition services such as Gasser Music Studio where I had to accommodate for many different levels of ability each day. I have also deputised for music services such as the Ramsbottom Music Service.

Outside of piano tuition I was a tutor in English and Maths for 2 years for Explore Learning. During my time there I worked with children from all sorts of different financial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and found that to be the highlight of my job! I also worked with children with SENs and helped manage and organise the centre with the managers.

Tutoring Approach:

The ultimate goal of any teacher is to no longer be needed, therefore I aim to instil critical thinking skills in my students so that they can spot areas for improvement independently. I also believe in a balanced musical education: technique, musicality, interpretation and music theory are all things I will aim to cover as these skills lend themselves well to one another in numerous ways. Above all music should be fun, yes it requires work and dedication, but it should never feel like a chore. Working together towards a common goal should be an exciting venture between teacher and student and this I think is key to the longevity of one's piano studies once the teacher is gone.

In light of Covid-19 I am more than happy to teach online until a time in which it is safe to travel for lessons.
