Personal Description:
Hi, my name is Emily and I am a professional musician and Trumpet Graduate of the Royal College of Music, having received a 1st class honours degree in Trumpet Performance.
I have an up to date DBS check (available on request) and public liability insurance and I`m qualified to teach Trumpet, Cornet, Flugel, Clarinet etc.
I started playing Cornet at the age of 8 in the Forest of Dean and grew up playing in local brass bands, becoming Principal Cornet of the A.W. Parker (Drybrook) Band before moving on to the Assistant Principal Cornet position with Lydbrook Band.
I've been involved with many youth groups (Gloucestershire Youth Brass Band, National Youth Brass Band, National Youth Wind Ensemble) as both a player and a tutor. At the age of 16 I was awarded a music scholarship to study at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, where I took up playing the trumpet.
During my time at Wells I was awarded the prestigious Keith Nutland Memorial Award at the Cheltenham Competitive Music Festival and the Margaret Rose Bursary in the Forest of Dean.
Having had a very successful two years at Wells Cathedral School, I earned scholarships to the Royal College of Music, the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music. I accepted a place at the Royal College of Music in London to do my BMus (hons) degree in Trumpet Performance was taught by Alistair Mackie and Jason Evans.
I am currently a professional musician and Principal Cornet within the British Army Corps of Army Music.
Tutoring Experience:
I have been teaching both adults and children for many years now, having had my first pupil at the age of 14. Over the years I have volunteered at local brass bands helping tutor young children to bring them through the ranks and have been teaching ever since, gaining more pupils of a wider range of ages and abilities.
Tutoring Approach:
I offer the first lesson at a discounted price because I believe that it's very important for the student to meet me and make sure that they are happy and give them the opportunity to tell me what they want to achieve from their playing. From a very loosely structured first lesson, it allows me to set guidelines for what I think they can should aim to achieve and get to know them.
Every student of mine is different in every way, and the first lesson allows me to work out which teaching style I need to use.
With my students (especially the younger ones) I believe that they should also learn the basics in music theory, which I will gently incorporate into the lesson and music-making. This way, they have an academic understanding of what they are doing and can progress through the grades if they wish to.
I find that a very important part of teaching is to encourage musicality, and not just the mastering of technique.
