Personal Description:

I am a professional Jazz Double Bass Player who also enjoys playing classical music, I am a member the UEA Symphony Orchestra. I play professionally in a variety of Jazz groups, and was a founder member of the Red Shadow **Web Address Removed**
I studied Double Bass classical technique with Andrew Durban. I have over 30 years experience in professional music making originally as a saxophonist in pop and rock bands. Double Bass became my principal gigging instrument in the 1990's.
I completed a CTABRSM course in Instrumental teaching.
Plus a professional development course as an Instrumental Music Facilitator with Access to Music.
I subscribe to the DBS update service.

Tutoring Experience:

I teach from home and also work in schools teaching individually, running a beginners string group plus workshops in music and improvisation. I was the Double Bass Tutor for the Norwich 'In harmony' project and have worked with all ages of children. I have also taught Bass Guitar, Composition and Practical Musicianship as well as being a course leader for Access to Music.

Tutoring Approach:

If I have to summarise my approach I would say it is lead by the student. Learning any instrument requires a lot of motivation and when I meet a new student I try to find why they want to learn to play the Double Bass and work with that motivation that they have. The Double Bass requires a solid grounding of good technique to be able to play it well whatever the genre of music.
That is why I encourage my students to engage with classical technique.
I am also frequently required to teach students how to improvise jazz bass lines. This can be quite challenging as it involves not only establishing a good technique on the instrument but also developing an understanding of harmony which I do using a multi faceted approach combining theory, stylistic playing and aural development.
I am able to offer able to offer a discount to my hourly rate if lessons are paid for in advance. I can also offer a concessionary rate for those in full time education.
