Personal Description:

I attended Napier Polytechnic where I studied Composition with John McLeod and Double Bass with John Steer (Scottish Chamber Ochestra). I then moved to Manchester and studied Double Bass and Bass Guitar at the Royal Northern College of Music in the early nineties before returning to Edinburgh to attend Edinburgh University where I completed a Masters Degree.

Tutoring Experience:

Over the course of my career I have divided my time between playing and teaching in a variety of contexts. This includes nineteen years as a full time Lecturer at Edinburgh College where I delivered and assessed a broad range of practical music units for both BTEC and SQA. Subjects taught included Bass Guitar, Music Theory, Aural training, Composition, Songwriting, Analysis and Music for Film.

I run Music Theory evening classes for students who are preparing for ABRSM exams and have private students studying Double Bass, Bass Guitar and Music Theory. My instrumental teaching experience has typically included preparing students for graded exams grades for the ABRSM, Rockschool and Trinity College syllabuses. I have taught students with a wide range of ages, abilities and social backgrounds.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a comprehensive range of experience in teaching and performance and have a positive, professional outlook. I am a motivator, have a good rapport with students and take a creative approach to delivering lessons and classes. I am an adaptable teacher with broad experience in adjusting teaching methods to meet the needs of individual students, classes and year groups. I am committed to raising standards in both musicianship and academia and am committed to the students I teach.
