Personal Description:

I am British and a mother tongue English speaker. I am an experienced teacher of Spanish and also English as a Foreign Language.

I work with students who have varying objectives for studying the language. Some need Spanish for work purposes, others for holidays, for living in the country or simply to pursue a new interest.

I am located in Tynemouth and can teach anywhere in the north east which is accessible by public transport.

Teaching Experience:

I learned Spanish about 25 years ago when I worked at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and was posted to Venezuela for three years. I have a high level of Spanish knowledge and have worked for many years as a translator. I started teaching Spanish to adults about 5 years ago.

I started teaching English as a foreign/second language in 2018 (after gaining the Cambridge English Language Training to Adults (CELTA) qualification). I have taught in the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany and Slovakia. I have taught general and business-focussed English.

Teaching Approach:

My approach to teaching is to make lessons productive but also engaging for students. I do this by ensuring a class is varied but still with a particular focus. For example if the lesson aim is to teach vocabulary connected with food and restaurants, I would plan first to teach key phrases, then vocabulary for food, using pictures. I would then cover relevant grammar, for example how to say 'I like/I don't like'. The lesson would culminate in a small role play, enabling the student to activate the language learned - my aim in this is to help the student feel a sense of achievement and progress at the end of a session.

My current students have been kind enough to say that they really enjoy my approach to teaching.

From John (5/5): Yvonne has been terrific and patient. She has taken time to understand what we need from the lessons and is producing the lessons to suit this.
My wife and I are really happy how the lessons are progressing and would definitely recommend Yvonne to anyone want to learn.

From alan (5/5): After just one lesson I can say with absolute confidence that Yvonne is a talented teacher. She thoroughly prepared the lesson using a variety of techniques that involved practising listening, speaking and reading and left me with a few tasks to do to consolidate the learning. She has an engaging and relaxed approach that put me at ease from the start. As an intermediate learner of Spanish with very limited experience of speaking Spanish I was a little nervous at first but this quickly dissolved. I am a teacher of many years and I recognise excellent teaching when I see it. If you are looking for a teacher of Spanish, look no further.

She was able to engage very well with a 16 year old with her friendly approach, often designing the sessions around his interests to encourage interest and engagement. She has been very flexible throughout and her input has been very useful.
