Personal Description:
A Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists, I am passionate about communicating in foreign languages. Since leaving university with a first-class degree in Spanish and German I have always worked with languages. In my translation work I specialise in children's books. I regularly visit schools to talk about careers with languages. In 2021, I was named Outreach Champion by the Institute of Translation and Interpreting for my work in schools to promote language learning. I also work part time for a travel company specialising in educational trips abroad. I have two school age children and enjoy working with adults and children alike.
Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring privately since 2009 alongside my other language-based activities. I have helped pupils to prepare for their GCSE and A Level exams and assessments and I am pleased to be able to say that all my pupils have achieved their goal or better. From 2011-2022, I taught Spanish for the University of the Third Age. These were classes for older adults.
Teaching Approach:
GCSE / A-Level: I refer to specific exam board syllabus together with other materials, identifying weak points and working with the pupil to strengthen these. Lessons are tailored to specific needs. I use past papers covering reading, writing, listening and oral, offering practice for the real exam. We also look at what the examiners want to see in order to unlock the higher grades. In the run up to exams, we put together a large revision reference sheet which contains useful information to aid revision.
I particularly enjoy working with those pupils who are perhaps just missing the grade they need to progress in their chosen study path. With these students it is often about exam preparation and life skills (e.g how to "perform" in an oral test) as much as it is about language proficiency.
Adult learning: Lessons can be tailored to cover what you want to learn. I offer complete beginner classes as well as classes for those with prior knowledge. I can also offer business language.
General: I believe that a sound knowledge of basic grammar is essential to learning a language and ensure that this is covered in classes. Classes should, however, also be fun and practical and I want students to really get involved. I use role play, games and other learning aids, such as a play mat and cars for learning directions, or setting up a cafe for learning about food and drink.
As a member of the Chartered Insitute of Linguists, I abide by their Code of Professional conduct.
