Personal Description:
Hello, my name is Jo, and I’m a dedicated and enthusiastic English tutor with a passion for helping learners grow in confidence and communication. Language has always been an important part of my life, and I’m committed to making English engaging, accessible, and relevant for every student I work with.
I believe that learning a language is not just about grammar and vocabulary—it’s about expression, connection, and finding your voice. My approach is supportive, patient, and personalised, ensuring that each student feels comfortable, motivated, and genuinely excited about their progress.
Whether the goal is to improve speaking skills, build strong writing habits, expand vocabulary, or gain confidence in everyday conversation, I strive to create a learning experience that is encouraging, enjoyable, and tailored to individual needs. I bring empathy, enthusiasm, and a genuine belief in every learner’s ability to grow and succeed.
Teaching Experience:
I began my teaching journey over ten years ago after completing the Trinity CertTESOL qualification, a 120-hour, in-person training course focused on practical, high-quality English language teaching.
My first teaching role was in Barcelona, where I taught English to learners of all ages and levels, including exam preparation for the Cambridge First Certificate. I also worked in summer schools, gaining valuable experience teaching intensive English programmes to international students.
After returning to the UK, I worked as a teaching assistant with a strong focus on English—supporting students with reading, comprehension, writing skills, and overall language development. Alongside this, I have tutored English at both GCSE level and Key Stage 2, helping learners build confidence, improve grades, and strengthen their core literacy skills.
In addition to English, I have also taught Art at Key Stage 2 and 3, applying creative, student-centred approaches that support both skill development and self-expression.
For the past two years, I’ve been teaching English as a foreign language, both online and in person. I currently work with students aged 4 to 80 from a wide range of nationalities, abilities, and learning needs. My lessons cover everyday communication, Business English, workplace-specific language, exam support, and English for travel or relocation.
Teaching Approach:
I believe teaching really works best when it's individual and personalised - that’s why I tend to teach either 1:1 or in small groups. This way I can give my full attention to each student, get to know them properly, listen to what they want, and really tailor the classes to them.
I’m flexible: if a student needs structure, we’ll work with clear objectives and step-by-step guidance. If they thrive with more freedom, I let the lesson flow more organically, following their interests, pace, and personal style.
