Personal Description:

I am a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese. I have language and teaching qualifications from both China and the UK with more than 15 years experience of language teaching in both countries. I can provide one to one and group tuition for learners of all age groups, from complete beginners to advanced level for students and business people. I am available at most times of the day and evenings. I speak Chinese with a standard Mandarin accent and have a neutral speaking ability in English. In my spare time I like to read classic novels and research history, which was my favourite subject at school. I enjoy cooking Chinese and English dishes and like to draw landscapes with a Chinese style as I had studied Chinese painting styles while working in Hong Kong as a Mandarin tutor at the Chinese University.

Teaching Experience:

I have been teaching both mandarin and English languages mainly in the UK, China, Hong Kong and at times other countries while living abroad. I have experience of teaching to many nationalities, from primary school children to senior business executives. I have a PGCE in teaching for post compulsory education, a Masters in TESOL from University of Leicester and my first degree is in English from Beijing Foreign Language Institute. I have experience of teaching via Zoom, Skype, Microsoft Teams and face to face.

Teaching Approach:

I like to concentrate on proper speaking with a neutral accent that is recognisable worldwide. Writing and recognition of Chinese characters is also a very important part of my teaching for which I use various techniques such as flash cards and student textbooks for which I have an extensive library. At the end of each lesson I give a short quiz on works covered during that lesson and also regularly review previous lessons accomplishments. In this way I ensure the student continually progresses and gains confidence in all the areas of speaking, reading and writing. I can quickly recognise where the student has difficulties in their understanding of the topic being taught and will then concentrate on that area until all is clear to the student and they are happy to move on. I can teach via Zoom, Skype and Teams or face to face.

From Gavin (5/5): I studied for about half a year with Tian and was very impressed by her tutoring ability. In the time before I could no longer continue lessons, Tian covered many topics which she had planned for each week, whilst always asking me if I had any requests for topic ideas (I just let her choose and they were great). I am a British person with no previous experience of learning Chinese, but was never made to feel uncomfortable and was introduced in the appropriate manner to the language. Aside from the great lessons, Tian is a great person with a good sense of humour. If I find the time somehow, I will be restarting lessons when I can. I definitely recommend - 谢谢!
