Personal Description:

Hello! I'm a student at the University of Edinburgh. I moved here in September to do a Linguistics MSc – languages are my biggest passion and my career.

I was born in Italy but I moved to Barcelona, Spain at a very young age. When I was twenty I moved to the UK and did a bachelor in Wildlife Media.

Teaching Experience:

I've tutored privately for 4 years now to both adults and university students. Last year, to improve my skills as a teacher I took a an introductory course in education and training at the University of Central Lancashire.

Teaching Approach:

I've taught to students at very different levels, from absolute beginners to conversational speakers. I try to tailor the lessons to the students' interests and aims as much as I can.

For example, just last year I taught Italian to a retired couple that was planning on spending two months in southern Italy. In the lessons I focussed mostly on their conversation skills and everyday vocabulary, and less on explicit grammar rules. The exercises encouraged them to improvise and roleplay, activating the fundamentally creative aspect of language.

On the other end of the spectrum, for the whole of that same year and the year before I tutored a student with almost native fluency. With him, I focussed mostly on maintaining his conversation skills and widening his vocabulary. To do this we often read Italian poetry and books and even listened to some opera, dealing with advanced grammar questions when (and if) they arose.

I always prepare handouts for the lessons for the students to follow in class. Often these include exercises to activate grammar skills or stimulate vocabulary recall.
