Hola, my name is Drew and I`ve been a Spanish tutor for 13 years.
Since 2003, I have tutored hundreds of students, adults and children alike, as well as a portfolio of corporate clients including the Foreign Office, the BBC, the NHS, Admiral PLC, various Premiership Football Clubs, PHS Group, Atradius and The History Channel.
I was schooled at The Old Palace School of John Whitgift for Girls in Surrey, ranked in the top 100 Independent Schools league table. I studied European Studies and later Spanish at Cardiff University where I obtained a BA Honours Degree, having studied and worked abroad in Santiago de Compostela in Galicia for my year abroad.
Upon graduation, I worked as a Financial and Business Analyst for Citigroup and Thomson Reuters in the City of London, in various client-facing positions liaising with Spanish and French companies.
I have also been a regular contributor on BBC Radio in relation to various Spanish-speaking topics.
Last summer, I took a sabbatical and travelled to Central America, visiting Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Cuba.
I speak fluent Spanish, French, Gujarati and conversational Italian.
I believe with my qualifications, experience, dedication to teaching and my knowledge of Spain and Central/South America, you will learn Spanish in an engaging, professional environment and reach your Spanish goals.
I have vast experience teaching students of all levels and ages:
General Spanish: If you are Beginners or Intermediate level, this course will help you to grasp the basics of the language and increase your command of the language, making you more confident in your core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. These classes are suitable for students who wish to improve their everyday Spanish knowledge and want a broad overview of topics, including holiday Spanish. Classes can also be tailored to a specialism you may be interested in, for example, medicine, law, culture, sport and education.
Pre-GCSE, GCSE, AS and A2 Level Spanish: Exam classes place emphasis on revising grammar, verb tenses and topic-specific vocabulary. These classes also focus on developing ideas and opinions and utilising exam techniques such as mind mapping, how to learn from mistakes, improving translation skills, essay writing and planning, understanding what examiners are looking for in answers and how to check your work. For AS/A2 level, syllabus topics will be studied as will literature and film. I have experience in tutoring across all examination boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, IB, CIE and WJEC.
Intensive Spanish: These are suitable for students who wish to achieve their goals by a specific deadline, whether it’s one week or 3 months and have more than two hours per week.
Business Spanish: Business classes are for students who wish to improve their business Spanish knowledge and want either a broad overview of topics, or concentrate on a business specialism. For example, I currently have Business students working in the IT, finance, insurance, medical, law, broadcasting, technology and waste management sectors. You will learn business phrases that you are likely to use for business trips, emails, video conferences, projects and other business context communication. I also incorporate Spanish business cultures, customs and etiquette. Past and present business clients include the BBC, the NHS, Admiral PLC, PHS Group, Atradius and The History Channel.
Children`s Spanish: Children’s Spanish classes place emphasis on fun and learning - I use a variety of interactive resources such as wall charts, maps, flashcards, games, colouring sheets, memory cards, music and songs, apps and puzzles. For younger children, resources are colourful, easy to use and exploratory. For older children, a beginners children’s text book is used and supplemented with lots of interactive worksheets and games.
Spanish by Skype: Online classes are ideal for students who have busy schedules or want to learn from the comfort of their own home or office and are particularly great for improving conversation and listening. During class, we can read, speak and listen to each other. Through the music player you will also be able to hear the listening exercises in the text book. There is also an Instant Messaging board so that we can write notes and corrections, these can then easily be printed. You too can also write notes on a notepad during the lesson if you wish. Skype allows for attachments to be emailed during the conversation if necessary. Prior to the lesson, I may also email you some relevant worksheets and homework so that you can prepare before the lessons starts.
I do everything I can to make my classes relevant to the student and his or her specific needs and goals. I have a very personable attitude and my aim is to engage the theory of what is being learnt with the practical aspect of the language, in order to provide quick and measurable results.
