I am a friendly tutor who obtained a First Class degree (highest in year) in Japanese Studies from the University of Cambridge (Trinity College), and am now studying for a Master's degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies.
During my time as an undergraduate, I also spent one year studying abroad at Doshisha University in Kyoto. I also lived and worked as a lawyer in Tokyo for six months in 2016.
Having worked as a lawyer for three years, I have now returned to academia and completing a Master's degree at the School of Oriental and African Studies.
In addition to tutoring Japanese language, I am an expert in the study of Japanese society (my undergraduate dissertation was published in a book and features on university reading lists around the world). Should you wish, I am therefore able to teach you a lot about Japan in addition to the language.
Many people may think they would prefer to learn a language from a native speaker; however, I am convinced that, particularly with a language as difficult as Japanese, it is actually beneficial to learn from someone who was also once a beginner and had to learn in the same way you are. Native Japanese speakers will not always appreciate the particular difficulties that, for example, a native English speaker might have in learning Japanese. I can give you all the tips and strategies that got me a First Class degree in Japanese from Cambridge!
In addition to tutoring Japanese, I have experience tutoring English as a foreign language to a variety of students (young and old) in Japan, offering UCAS application advice to students, and tutoring Law to GDL and LPC students.
I am friendly, fun and approachable tutor - I want to make sure you enjoy learning with me!
I will be sure to establish from the outset what your goals are, so that we can make sure we are set to achieve these. We can adapt lessons and tutoring patterns to make sure they fit your needs and I can be entirely flexible in that regard.
I am happy to discuss travelling to you to tutor (subject to distance and hours booked), and am also very happy to welcome you to my home to be tutored, or to have lessons online (e.g. via Skype).
