Information About Catherine - Northampton teacher
This is how 3 referees rated Catherine:
I have a BA (Hons) degree from Warwick University in French and German studies and I can tutor both of these subjects to A-level. In 2007 I decided to return to the classroom myself and gained an A* Spanish GCSE grade as an adult learner. I have further improved my level by taking part in advanced conversation classes and have now taught Spanish up to GCSE level with successful results. I am based in Northampton, where I live with my husband, two boys and a cat. I love all things related to language-learning and strive to help my students thrive in their studies.
I qualified as a secondary school teacher in 2004 and worked at a secondary school for 4 years, during which time I taught both French and German to GCSE. I have also taught both languages to A-level. For two years I also worked in primary schools as a peripatetic French teacher in two different schools. Since starting a family, I have been self-employed and have worked with people of all ages ranging from toddlers to people enjoying tuition during retirement. The types of lessons taught also vary greatly: from songs and games with little ones, to vocabulary and grammar, to magazine based cultural discussion groups in the target language. I have tutored students both on a 1:1 basis and group situation and helped them to prepare for GCSE and A-level qualifications in French and German. I have also worked with home-educators as well as delivering evening classes for the Northamptonshire Adult Learning Service. I have significant experience of working with students with special needs, in particular with people on the autistic spectrum.
My approach is learner-centred. From the first meeting, I aim to assess the learner's needs and construct a scheme of learning that is right for them. My aim is to make learning focussed on the learner's individual goals. Some people need to take an academic approach to pass exams, whilst others need practical language skills to enable them to communicate on holiday or often as second home owners of property in France, Germany or Spain. I aim to make all lessons lively and engaging and to provide a balanced mix of listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, where appropriate. I believe that forming a good professional relationship with the student and their family is paramount in achieving the communication necessary for best meeting the needs of the student. Finally, I recognise that all students have different abilities and my aim is to provide both challenge and support for all.
