I grew up fascinated by languages, yet unable to have much access to learning any. At 16 I started my journey into language learning and linguistics, and have followed it to now, being a professional medical, geographic, and literary translator. I have also participated in various volunteer translation projects for humanitarian companies and journalistic bodies.
I have travelled extensively through Europe, engaging myself with people from many backgrounds and places, and I have always found myself yearning to dive into the culture to obtain new ways of seeing the world. History is a true passion of mine, especially monarchic and dynastic history, which again is linked to my passion for travelling, as cultures differ as much through time as they do location.
Overall I am someone who takes the best interests of people at heart, and I take this attitude into my teaching!
I have 2 years of teaching experience in all age ranges, including 1 year in France, working in 2 primary schools and 1 college simultaneously. I have also provided private and online tutoring for both adults and children, as well as volunteer group language lessons. My current experience can includes:
2 months Business speaking tutoring:
- Topic introductions
- Stating and defending opinions
- Developing talking points
- Vocabulary expansion
- Intensive practice
4 months experience in providing culture-focused lessons prioritising in:
- Culture-specific norms
2 month of experience providing students with the tools and confidence to engage in normal, ranging conversations about almost any aspect of life. I can focus on helping students with spontaneity and switching topics, or alternatively, I can help them to avoid long digressions and wandering.
I think that the best way to learn, and teach, a language is to create a relaxed, supportive environment for every student. I make it my objective to provide personalised lessons, allowing the student to have input on what they need/want to learn at a pace that is decided between us.
I make sure to provide an all-round service, improving on all aspects such as Speaking, Listening, Reading, Writing, Pronunciation, and Grammar.
I also like to teach what I call "transferable understanding". This is the idea that I do not simply teach 'what' to say and 'how' to say it, but also 'why'. This is important and really beneficial as with this 'why', a student can take what is learned and apply it in the future to be more confident and clear with their language use, and may also apply the same philosophy to learning other languages!
