Hello, I'm Anna and I'm an Italian native-speaker from Venice. I have a degree in English, French and Italian literature from the University of Padua, as well as a Masters degree in Fine Arts from the Central St. Martins college of art in London.
I'm a passionate tutor with more than ten years' teaching experience in London and my students' brilliant results speak for themselves. In fact, I put great energy into my teaching and receive great energy back.
I actually started out tutoring English in Italy while studying at University. My first student was Diamante. She was 8 years old and a very shy little girl who didn't speak a single word of English. The approach was to speak English to her from the very first time we met. It worked wonderfully and Diamante still speaks fluent English. But there are many different ways to teach a language and I find the right approach for each individual student.
Since I moved to London in 2004, I have given countless hours of private Italian tuition to British people. I have come to understand and anticipate students' difficulties - conjugations or pronunciation for instance - and take great satisfaction from helping students over these hurdles and giving them confidence.
My students' age and backgrounds vary: GCSE, A level and university students; lawyers; businessmen; and other professionals.
I regularly give courses of Italian at the BBC.
I give personalised one-to-one tuition by monitoring my students continuously on the four skills of writing, reading, speaking, listening. I strongly believe in tailored sessions as individuals have individual needs and the learning process is about addressing these needs. For beginners, each lesson is initially structured in three parts. First, we review the previous lesson and homework. Next, we study new grammar. Finally we have a conversation in Italian. This last part is the most rewarding. A conversation in Italian - however basic - gives the student a feeling of achievement and progress. Soon, classes become more targeted to fulfil the student's individual goals and motivations. Accordingly, I use different tools, like films, art, book reading and the internet, to develop each skill. For intermediate and advanced students, the first class is meant to assess the student's personal interests and learning requirements which will allow me to set a personalised teaching plan. Homework is an important part of the learning process; studying at home allows the student to develop the skills learnt in the last lesson and identify issues we can address together in the next. Conversation is what my students enjoy most. They soon gain confidence in speaking through what I call 'guided conversation', which is usually combined with improvised conversation after a few classes.
