Hello. I'm half-French, have a good Languages degree from Cambridge and a PGCE teaching qualification from the University of Bath [French / German / Italian] and I was a French teacher for twenty years. I currently give tuition in French [and English]. I actually work part-time in a variety of fields, but have always retained my passion for French, and France, and every day I keep up to date online with what is going on across the Channel. I spent a year in Toulouse during my degree. I used to have a house in Brittany, and go to France when I can. I have also translated for companies and individuals, and marked and moderated for exam boards. I have, more recently, worked as an administrator and like to be organised and punctual! I am happy to travel to my students if required, within ten miles, but this would be at a slight additional charge. I have already had a DBS check in place for tutoring.
I was a Modern Languages teacher in various good schools including Bedales and, locally to the South-West, Blundell's [where I was Head of Mod Langs]. I have taught mainly Y7-Y13 students, in other words I was delivering language-teaching to meet GCSE, AS and A-Level criteria, but also younger pupils and adults. I have been involved in management in schools but preferred to focus on the teaching / learning process itself. I have experience of using technology, having used computers since the 1980s and SmartBoards since the early 2000s. I have taken trips to France and set up a work-experience programme with our twin-town.
I like to focus on the spoken language and the basics of structuring a good sentence, but I am happy to address whatever language- area is calling for improvement. I am happy to tailor learning-methods to individual student requirements, for example using IT and creating recordings of language, but equally I am happy to chat away in French for anyone just looking to revive previous fluency. I like helping people to get better at the language and to prepare them to survive not only exams but real France. My aim is to instil confidence through regular practice at an always manageable level - whether for a beginner or an advanced student, child or adult, finding and exploring areas of common interest. That way, learning can become embedded - and, more importantly, futures can be enhanced. My understanding of learning languages is that, crucially, you have to listen first to then be able to speak, and likewise to read first in order to write. I also sense that language-learning can bring out new aspects of your personality. We all know the phrase: 'Learning languages opens doors', so let's see what doors can open for you…
