Information About Alastair - Edinburgh teacher
This is how 2 referees rated Alastair:
Hello there! My name's Alastair. I recently graduated with a Master of Arts degree in French and German from the University of St Andrews, and I tutor both of those languages at a variety of proficiency levels, all depending on your requirements! Languages and language learning have always been hobbies of mine, which is what helped me also pick up conversational skills in both Icelandic and Japanese over the last few years. As for interests outside of language, I'm a keen cook, and I take playing the ukulele far more seriously than is reasonable.
As part of my university degree I spent a year teaching English at two schools in Würzburg, Germany (Deutschhaus-Gymnasium and Friedrich-Koenig-Gymnasium). The students I taught varied in age from 8-18, which has given me experience not only in dealing with a variety of different age groups, but also with many different levels of language proficiency. My tasks included class preparation and management, helping to improve linguistic comprehension (for aural, oral, and written language), explaining translation methodology, as well as specialised and personalised meetings for individual students with both learning and behavioural difficulties. I also have direct experience with tutoring outside of a classroom setting, having tutored students in general language acquisition, specific grammatical issues, and exam preparation.
A lot of people are convinced that languages aren't for them, that being monolingual is an inevitability, or that learning a language can't be fun. I wholeheartedly believe that anyone is capable of learning a language to whatever level they want, and that sometimes you just need a helping hand. This is where I come in. My job is to help you find out what sort of language-learning works for you, and help you follow that path. Everyone has strengths, and our aim will be to focus on yours. I want to help you gain confidence and start enjoying the language, and I can promise that you will flourish as a consequence. Some people are drawn to grammar and structure, some have a knack for memorising vocabulary, and some prefer to learn face-to-face. Whatever your needs are, I can mould your learning experience to make it both fun and efficient, whilst helping you achieve whatever your goals are.
