Personal Description:
I am an experienced language teacher with a PGCE and a degree in Modern Languages from Oxford University. I have also completed an MA in Linguistics, specialising in second/third language acquisition. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy travelling, reading, cooking and going to the cinema.
Teaching Experience:
I have seven years of experience in teaching French and Spanish at secondary school level. I have worked in both state and private schools, and in mixed school as well as boys/girls schools. I have taught both in class and online.
Classes/subjects that I can offer:
- primary level languages, offering an introduction to the language through videos and games
- K3 French and Spanish, to equip students with the grammar, vocabulary and exam skills in preparation for GCSE
- GCSE French and Spanish - I have indepth knowledge of the courses (AQA, Edexcel, iGCSE) and the exam skills required. I can offer classes tailored to a particular skills (e.g. speaking or writing) or more general classes
- A Level French and Spanish - I have experience in teaching both AQA and Edexcel. I am able to provide tuition on the film element of the course (La Haine, Intouchables, Volver, El laberinto del fauno)
- functional French and Spanish classes for casual learners who want to communicate effectively in the language
Teaching Approach:
My approach depends on the objective of my students. I try to include a variety of activities to cover the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, to ensure that progress is made across all skills areas. For students wishing to learn a language for academic purposes, I obviously also include grammar and vocabulary. For students who are more interested in functional language skills, my main focus is on communication via speaking, and using authentic resources to prepare them for life/holidays in a foreign country.

From Faith (/5): Lesley is an excellent tutor. She has been supporting my daughter (currently Y10) as she approaches her French GCSE and I have seen her progress in leaps and bounds: both in terms of her written skills and speaking. So much so that my daughter is now keen to continue her French studies to A Level. As well as helping advance her learning, I am told the lessons are hugely enjoyable. I would not hesitate to recommend Lesley.

As she promised, when we spoke to her the very first time, she encourages speaking French throughout her lessons and makes sure our son does not worry about making mistakes - because that’s the best way to learn. She has also created a well structured lesson that focuses on his individual needs. Lesley’s enthusiasm for the language and sharing her own passion is infectious. Our son is very happy. We can’t recommend her highly enough.

She has provided lesson feedback, been very responsive to questions/messages, been extremely flexible in helping him prepare for his exams, and arranged her time so that she could be present at his French oral presentation (at the exam location's insistence).
We are so glad and grateful that we found Lesley on this web site.

Lesley is very professional and reliable and things have gone very smoothly in terms of organising and attending the lessons, which are online. She puts a lot of effort into preparing materials to meet my daughter's specific needs and works hard to make sure she addresses the things she needs to work on to get the best grade she can. My daughter really enjoys the lessons and always feels very pleased at the end as her knowledge is improved - her confidence with the French language has grown considerably since starting the tuition and in my view it has been a very worthwhile investment. I would recommend Lesley as a French tutor without hesitation.

Lesley has been able to provide challenge and support that has stretched my daughter and personalised her learning that is not always possible in a school class. She has a holistic view of my daughter’s needs and has been helpful in providing support in the areas of reading, listening, writing and speaking as well as the literature element of the course. Lesley is very knowledgeable of the exam board requirements and how to maximise the marks to achieve the grades. Her flexible approach has meant she has been able to adapt to support her with HW and exam preparation.
The help she has given has supported my daughter to improve considerably in a short time. There were unsolicited comments from her teachers about my daughter’s ‘depth’ of knowledge and understanding following only a few lesson from Lesley.
In short she has maximised learning and understanding in my daughter’s weaker areas and provided motivation and encouragement that has been reflected in better test scores and homework grades in preparation for her final exams.
