Hi, I am Tommaso,
I am a final year PhD student in particle physics at Durham University and Queen Mary University of London.
My PhD project deals with theoretical and experimental aspects of particle physics, specifically focusing on ubiquitous yet elusive particles called neutrinos. My typical day consists of a lot of coding, translating hard and difficult problems into computer-digestible chunks, and crunching a lot of numbers hoping to get closer to new discoveries. More than often, I also seek help from my colleagues and I have to explain to them what I am after in the simplest terms, in order to be as efficient as possible.
I am from Italy and I graduated with honours from my hometown university, the Università degli Studi di Padova. I love cooking and baking and listening to music.
I have been tutoring high school and university students in maths and physics ever since I started my higher education. Along my academic path, I learnt how to communicate efficiently not only to my peers, but also to the wider public. Besides private tutoring, I have taken part in numerous outreach projects in which I had to explain advanced topics such as particle physics to young school kids.
I have tutored python 3 and SQL to MSc students of the Imperial College Business School in the 2019-2020 academic year.
In my experience, the most effective way of learning or understanding something is by putting it into practice. And this is more than true for coding!
When tutoring other subjects, I give a lot of importance to applications and examples, and I always try to find down-to-earth explanations, so that even the hardest concept can be broken down into easier principles. In the case of coding, diving into real-world applications or building a project bottom-up is the most effective way of learning.
It is my firm belief that anyone is capable of learning anything, given the time and a good teacher.
