Personal Description:
I taught academic Psychology for over twenty years at a college rated 'Outstanding' by OFSTED. I worked with young people at all academic levels - GCSE, BTEC, A Level, Degree. I also worked throughout this time in a number of pastoral contexts; personal tutor. social skills training, leading emotional management workshops and advocacy. My background was in Youth Work before I went into teaching, and for a year I managed a resource offering individual help and support to disadvantaged and emotionally challenged young people. I am now semi-retired; I work both as an academic Psychology examiner and as a private academic tutor. In recent years I have also been working as a life coach with young people.
Training Specialisms:
Over the last decade there has been a worrying increase in reported levels of mental health issues among young people. This phenomenon further suggests there may well be many people who are struggling, but have not reported or shared their concerns with anyone. I have always thought that Emotional Management training should be available and accessible for every young person from age 11 (perhaps in school) right through to early adulthood. There are a range of techniques and strategies that every young person can absorb and practice that will massively aid their resilience in the face of all kinds of social, academic and professional pressures, strategies that are useful and lifelong. That's where I come in.
Training Methods:
In the first instance it is crucial to establish if life-coaching/emotional management is appropriate - to that end initial contact via the site will hopefully establish IF I can help, and most importantly whether any training I offer will be practical and useful for the client. Having established the areas the particular individual needs to work on, I will devise a bespoke programme for the client. I will never specify EXACTLY how long each client needs - sometimes a particular individual may feel they will benefit from 3-4 sessions; others may need longer. There is no set formula. In recent years my emotional management training strategies have been influenced by the writings and ideas of the renowned sports psychologist Dr Steve Peters (former Psychologist with Liverpool FC and UK cycling team, and author of 'The Chimp Paradox'). Clients will find that I am open, friendly and practical and above all reassuring.

We reached out to Richard in the autumn term, and he was fantastic! He assessed our son's knowledge and helped identify and address areas of weakness. He helped rebuild our son's confidence, prepare him for his next mocks in November… and he made the learning process enjoyable!
As a result, our son's prediction improved from the grade D he achieved in the summer to a grade A.
Thank you so much, Richard!
Thank you so much Richard for all your hard work and support on behalf of myself and my son. Good luck for the future.
Richard covers the material in detail and my daughter thoroughly enjoys his sessions and is learning a lot.
Thank you so much.
Have a wonderful time at Uni Hugh.

He is a natural teacher and explains things in a way which Sam can relate too.
Worth every penny!
Thank you
Highly recommend!

I would strongly recommend other students to hire Richard as a tutor, as he will undoubtedly support you to excel in your academic achievement.

Richard, thank you so, so much for all the time, effort and hard work that enabled me to get to grips with it. I really, really enjoyed my classes and you opened a new world of thoughts and ideas to me.
It inspired me, challenged me and enthralled me! Thank you so, so much!
I had several lessons with Richard, both online and at his home. It was clear from the moment we first met he was a very intelligent man with a passion for teaching and Psychology (as well as other subjects). On a few occasions he went above and beyond to help me understand the subject. His enthusiasm, knowledge and teaching technique really helped me understand Psychology within a short period. And if I had not received such a high level of tutoring from Richard, I believe my grade could have fallen short of my conditional offer to become a Student Paramedic.
And above all else, Richard is a very genuine, friendly guy who I really enjoyed learning from.
Thank you, Richard!
Chris.
All the very best for September.
Regards,
Richard
