Acting / Drama
My name's Essie and I’m a 27 year old self-employed actor living in Clapham. I have recently graduated from one of the top ranking British drama schools, The Oxford School of Drama, where I undertook the three year course in Professional Acting. Before drama school, I gained a 2:1 BA degree in English Literature and Theatre from the University of Sheffield. I’m a dedicated and driven teacher with a warm and encouraging approach to my students. I offer a wide range of services, from helping with GCSE or A level practical work, to drama school audition prep, and even to helping those who wish to act for fun or boost their confidence.
My training was based on the traditional values of classical acting, adapted to suit the needs of contemporary media. There was a heavy focus on Shakespeare’s work, which has equipped me with a strong understanding of theatrical language and a real enthusiasm for classical texts. However, I also have a great love for and expansive knowledge of contemporary theatre and new writing. As a professional actor it is imperative that I maintain an up-to date awareness of the fast paced industry and am therefore able to bring this knowledge into my classes when necessary through areas such as monologue choices.
I am also a keen dancer, singer and (of course) theatre goer. I am willing to travel around south London to tutor students, although would prefer to tutor from my home as it is quiet, has good, private space and provides a calm and friendly working atmosphere.
I have a wide range of experience in teaching, mentoring and workshop leadership and, throughout the years, I have taught an age range varying from 11 to 65. As well as one-to-one drama coaching, I am a singing teacher, choir leader and academic tutor. My experience has made me a very confident teacher with an excellent grasp of my subject areas.
I assess each tutee on an individual basis and determine how to make our sessions as beneficial as possible. My strong communication and organisation skills allow me to fully cater to their requirements and tackle whatever it is that they hope to gain from the sessions. As a tutor I bring a confidence, warmth and passion that allows my students to feel at ease and make the most of their sessions. One of the primary rules of acting is to allow yourself to fail, and I create an environment where that can be both possible and incredibly profitable.
A few examples of areas that I can help in are GCSE and A level drama, drama school audition technique (including areas such as monologue and song choice and preparation), acting coaching, acting for confidence and speaking in public.
Whatever it is that my tutees are looking to achieve, I will be fully dedicating in helping them reach their full potential!

I admit that I am new to singing (30 years old) so we are covering a song I prefer and doing some exercises to strengthen my voice.
If you have any questions about singing or how your body reacts to somethings she is very happy to stop, explain and discus. I couldn't ask for a more patient teacher.
Only suggestion would be not to remind students of how long left in each lesson - singing can be a great relaxation tool and life outside singing is already hard pressed at all - but I do understand the need to set boundaries!
My daughter is delighted and so are we to have found Essie… 5 stars!
