Acting / Drama
I am an actor and director based in Macclesfield. I have been working as an actor solidly since 2008 on national tours, international projects, One Man Shows, Physical Theatre and Theatre in Education. I have worked practically in many European styles and forms (Stanislavski, Brecht, Grotowski, Lecoq etc) I started working as an actor while I was studying my BA(hons) and when I completed it I started training actors alongside acting. I have always sought new theories, techniques and methods of performance in both a training capacity and a performance one. I am fascinated by the relationship we have in performance making to our histories - knowing what has come before to know where we can go - and as such have practically studied many cultural performance areas and am studying, alongside performer and deviser training, European Theatre history from the Greeks onwards at RADA.
I have been training actors since 2010 when I completed a BA(hons) in Theatre & Performance. For the Barbican Theatre, Plymouth and as a Freelancer I have taught, trained and facilitated actors, teachers, adults and children from age 3-50+ from Schools to Prisons and from 1 - 240 participants at a time. Most recently I have been training the students at the BRIT School and trained and worked with Artis Education. I have directed several pieces (mostly devised with some text based work) and have frequently directed monologues for successful Drama School applicants.
Everything I learn as an actor, director or student (or even in life) I feed directly into my approach to teaching. Having been deaf and taught myself out of a lisp, I appreciate the value of clear communication and as such I have learnt a lot from the voice and diction training at RADA. My key focus is not on teaching doctrine or methods for the sake of them, but on seeing where the student is in their academic or practical development and finding a way to help them take their next step with whatever techniques facilitate the development best. I believe a mix of challenge, fun and security (or "scaffolded" development) is the healthiest way for anyone to learn. A relaxed, practical and creative approach to taking on creative and academic challenges tends to yield the greatest results but I also know that every person will learn differently and seek to meet that need. I enjoy observing and facilitating the development of students and have learnt something from every student/workshop I have taught so far.
