Information About Joanna - Petersfield teacher
Acting / Drama
I'm a dedicated director, teacher, writer, coach, workshop leader, voice tutor, interactive lecturer on advanced communication skills and mentor of hundreds of students - and now, Junior Doctors - over a forty year career. I'm also the wife of a writer and mother of one son, now 28. My background is in teaching drama and directing youth theatre at the highest level, with great passion and, I hope, imagination: I was formerly Artistic Director of the Bedales Olivier Theatre and Head of Drama at Bedales School in Petersfield for nine years, (2001-2010) - hopefully a barnstorming era for drama at Bedales!
Since leaving Bedales in 2010 I've become the Advanced Communications Skills Specialist for trainee doctors for the Professional Support Unit at Health Education Wessex, Winchester, and take interactive lectures there for GP trainees and trainers alike, also working across Health Education England's other HQ's - (particularly HEE Kent, Surrey and Sussex). Currently, my main focus is on Advanced Communication Skills through Drama Training and I have a very high success rate in terms of helping Junior Doctors through the interpersonal aspects of a range of medical exams. I have taught A level and GCSE drama for 30 years. For the last eight years I have taught Speech and Lamda part time at the Sylvia Young Theatre School where I was Head of Speech and Lamda. I’m also a theatre director and drama teacher who has, in addition to teaching A level and GSCE drama, directed professionally-mounted youth theatre for over twenty years, a decade of that as Artistic Director of the state-of-the-art Bedales Olivier Theatre. I have a huge directorial repertoire which I am pretty proud to look back on and I hope I can say that my old casts still feel the same! Richard E Grant was kind enough to say of my work: “Jo : wonderfully imaginative and exciting productions.”
I would like to focus on Acting and Monologue coaching but I no longer teach GSCE or A Level students, (unless a student should need help with a specific monologue) nor do I take students through the Lamda process but again, I could offer a couple of stand-alone sessions on speech production and monologue perfecting. I would also like to offer my expertise on all matters of Personal Impact and what I call 'The Heightened Professional Persona' - this might involve interview approaches, presentation skills, handling meetings, speech training, nerve calming, approaching the interpersonal aspect of medical exams - indeed, all aspects of my work with the NHS and other businesses. I hope I can say that I'm extremely approachable, friendly and humorous, whilst also being intensely creative and imaginative in my approach. I have huge knowledge of my field and, in terms of advanced communication skills, I work in a fully embodied way to perfect the professional persona in terms of facial expression, voice and gesture and all aspects of physicality, (I have written an academic paper on this approach, co-authored by top doctors for the online journal 'The Clinical Teacher'. I prefer to work in person but, during the Covid-19 period, I'm offering to work online. In normal circumstances, working face to face, as I prefer to do, I do not work from home but, unless visiting a client, hire a lovely studio in Alresford, Hants, for my private sessions, (**Removed By Admin**, easy to get to, and park at!)
