Hi my names Jim, I am an actor and teacher based in Manchester. As a professional actor I've worked at places like The Globe, TR Plymouth, Park Theatre, Southwark Playhouse and for companies like Northern Broadsides and Middle Child. I have lots of professional experience on TV and film appearing in shows such as Coronation Street, Holby, New Blood, Doctors and playing Edward Wild in Mike Leighs Peterloo. Most recently appearing as Peter on My Mum Tracy Beaker. (Yep she's back)
I have worked at Rose Bruford in London in a freelance capacity for the last six years, running workshops for them as well as their regional auditions. I recently set up a scheme with them auditioning prospective students from underprivileged areas around the country for free, which I’m exceptionally proud of.
Last year I stumbled into offering 1 on 1 acting sessions in Manchester, with the success of my first two acting students both being offered places at drama school (LAMDA & LIPA) this year, I am wanting to pursue this further.
I’m also a mentor for Arts Emergency and a supported writer at Hull Truck Theatre and Manchester Royal Exchange and have a good knowledge of new writing and finding good audition pieces if you are auditioning for drama school.
I usually run my sessions individually or partner you up with another person depending on what your aim of the lessons are, for example should that be scene/TV work. I base my sessions in a studio on Edge Street in Manchester’s Northern Quarter but due to covid online zoom sessions are now available too. I adapt and design my classes around you and how you learn best.
I am heavily influenced by Sanford Meisner's workings and Uta Hagen’s, (if you don’t know who they are don’t worry). Having worked with Mike Leigh I also have experience in what its like to create work and characters from improvisation. Throughout my career I have worked on various classical texts, which as an aspiring performer I never thought I would do. Some of the techniques I have been taught and now use help to demystify performance of these texts. I really enjoy passing on this knowledge and encouraging students to work on texts they never thought they could do and was for them.
I offer classes in:
Approaching Classical Text
Audition Technique (TV & Theatre)
Drama School Auditions
Public speaking (non actors)
