Personal Description:

Hi, I’m Jess. I work as a writer, a singer-songwriter and a tutor and am based in Norwich, the ‘City of Stories.’ I enjoy working with children and adults, building skills in reading and handling texts, and building confidence in using language in creative and practical writing. I have plenty of experience tutoring in literacy as well as in creative writing, songwriting and playing the guitar. I enjoy many different types of writing and have worked for more than ten years as a professional musician touring the UK, Europe and North America. When not putting pen to paper, I enjoy running and spending time with my partner and young daughter.

Teaching Experience:

I have lots of experience tutoring young people from primary school age to GCSE in English and literacy skills.

I have also work regularly leading workshops in songwriting, creative writing and performance skills for young people and for those without previous experience and those who do not yet have a great deal of confidence in their writing.

Having worked previously as a visiting practitioner to schools, I was able to also develop with the National Centre for Writing, a number of song-lyric writing workshops including those which allow those who don’t sing or play instruments to get a taste of songcraft. I have also worked with First Light Lowestoft and The Seagull Theatre, helping young people to write with confidence. I am also a volunteer at YMCA in Norwich, encouraging residents between the ages of 16 - 25 with their creative arts.

Teaching Approach:

My experience leading workshops for people of different communities and abilities has taught me to be an inclusive facilitator. I really enjoy helping writers at all levels to build new confidence, to try new things and share ideas.

I enjoy encouraging and mentoring the new writers who can often be shy or vulnerable.
I enjoy building a rapport with tutees, and finding a learning style that works for the individual. I am happy helping students to generate their own ideas, and to develop and polish writing they can feel proud of.
