Acting / Drama
I am an actor, writer, artist and communication skills coach with over 12 years experience. I have a BA Honours degree in Dramatic Arts from the University of Leeds (2:1), and I went on to train as an actor at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). I have a Masters in Creative Writing from Goldsmiths, University of London, a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design from CITYLIT and a Certificate in Filmmaking (16mm), School of Continuing Professional Studies, New York University.
I acted for nine years in theatre, television, film and radio in UK and internationally.
My roles an have included; Desdemona in Othello and Joan in Time and the Conways at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester; Sheila in An Inspector Calls, a tour of Australia; Roz in We Happy Few at the Gielgud Theatre, West End; Viola in Twelfth Night at the Northcott Theatre; and Eugenie in Vincent In Brixton, a Royal National Theatre tour.
Film and TV roles include; Ballet Shoes; Ian Fleming: Bondmaker; Henry VIII; England Expects; and Cry Babies for BBC Radio 4.
I teach drama school applicants in preparation for their auditions.
I was Head of Courses at the Oxford School of Drama where I taught acting, text, and audition technique on the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I have worked as a cover teacher at RADA on the Dramaturgy and Text class, and a LAMDA speech and drama teacher at Stageworks Studio in Cambridge.
I'm an experienced trainer in public speaking and personal impact for presentations, interviews and being on camera. I have worked in one-to-one and group workshops in Presentation and Storytelling to professionals in business, academia and the charitable sectors. Most recently, I have worked with Deliotte and the European Union of Intellectual Property Office in Spain.
I have taught drawing and painting across a wide age range of students, from young people at GCSE level to adults wishing to extend their art practice.
Due to the Covid19 virus all my teaching is now being conducted online via Zoom or Skype. I have taught online for a number of years, and find although it is not the same as face to face, it is still an effective and focused way of teaching. Please do message me to ask if you have any queries about it.
Drama School Audition Technique:
We will try out audition pieces until we find ones that demonstrate your full ability and range. We look at how to be present in the moment, and draw on your own experience to develop a character in an organic and truthful way. I will teach you acting techniques drawn from Stanford Meisner, Stanislasvki and Harold Guskin. My aim is that you will learn to be playful, truthful and surprising in your performance. Overall, I will help you prepare for the often rigorous auditioning process, so you feel confident and willing to take risks on the day of the audition.
Elocution & Presentation Skills
The training is tailored to the needs of the individual. My ethos is to work with clients from the inside out, improving their skills to find an authentic way of communicating. I will guide a student through experiential exercises, in breath and voice, physicality, dealing with nerves using Mindfulness and storytelling techniques to help engage an audience. Students will deliver their presentation or mock interview, which will be followed by constructive feedback and analysis of areas for improvement. The continuing sessions will embed the previous work and refine delivery. By the end of the training, individuals will find greater confidence, authenticity and impact when presenting.
Regardless of the stage you are at, I will support you through your creative writing process. Whether it's developing ideas for fiction, screenwriting, memoir or poetry, I will set you writing tasks and assignments to get you to meet writing deadlines. As well as experimenting with different writing styles, I will give you notes and advice on editing and the structure of your writing. I will work intuitively to ensure you are supported and complete the goals that you set out to achieve.
Painting and Drawing
We will sketch from still life using pencil, ink and watercolour washes. We'll work on a series of quick sketches to capture a moment before moving to longer sustained paintings. I have a particular interest in light, texture and colour which informs my teaching practice. I encourage students to develop their own interests and nurture their talents as well as exercises to establish the discipline of regular drawing and looking.
