Pottery / Ceramics
Graduating with a First Class degree from Central Saint Martins in 2010, Ceramics and Sculpture is a practice I have incorporated into my art practice since 2013. I've studied ceramics at Morley College London and the Shadwell Centre. I create all my own casting slip recipes and build plaster moulds from found objects. I also know a variety of handbuilding techniques and exercises. I have an small electric kiln in my studio and also have built gas kilns. I make my own glazes and fire my own work too.
I have run workshops in hospitals, working with inpatients and hospital day patients and visitors. Based on the anthropomorphic vessels of West Africa we have built pots that represent our illness with the aim of using clay as a cathartic means to heal. I have also run workshops in which small pots were made and used in a performance. I would like to gain experience teaching a broad spectrum of people.
Clay for me, is especially healing, it has been used in therapy sessions and it's accessibility and instant results create satisfaction. It's not only a natural material, but can be cleaned with water, washes out of everything and can be re-cycled.
I will devise a person specific brief and teach a variety of ways of making, printing, creating textures. For more advanced students we will delve more into the scientific properties of the clay and potentially even fire the work.
