Hello! My name is Catriona. I have a PGCE Certificate in Secondary English Teaching and an MA Honours degree in English. I'm an experienced English tutor and published writer. I offer customised one-to-one English tutoring for adults and for secondary school aged pupils from first year to higher level as well as coaching in creative writing and proofreading of personal statements, articles, assignments and theses. As a writer, I've had two published collections: Shedding Skin and Night Train. My poetry and short stories have also appeared in magazines such as Pushing Out the Boat, Northwords Now, The Eildon Tree, Causeway, Southlight, Scottish Field, Arachne Press and Open Mouse. I've also had my poetry exhibited at RSA, Edinburgh and The Barn in Banchory, Aberdeenshire.
I have experience of teaching creative writing in secondary schools in Aberdeenshire and have run workshops for adults at the Grassic Gibbon Centre in Arbuthnott and Lemon Tree Writers group in Aberdeen.I have also tutored students (both secondary school and home-schooled pupils) in creative writing for many years. I very much enjoy working with all ages and watching confidence blossom throughout the sessions. As well as coaching students in developing their writing, I also offer constructive feedback on performing their work. I am a registered writer on Scottish Book Trust's Live Literature Scheme and have given readings at events all over Scotland including Pittenweem Arts Festival, St Magnus International Festival and the William Lamb Studio in Montrose.
I am very passionate about creative writing and encourage students to explore their imaginations and find their own voice through writing.Sessions will be completely tailored to each student's needs but will comprise of various exercises which will help the student explore their inner creativity. Aside from having a great deal of patience and empathy, I think it's important to create a good rapport with the student from the outset and make the tutoring relevant and personal by using a combination of teaching methods. I have tutored both children and adults with additional support needs and have learned that flexibility and adaptability are really key as everybody is an individual and responds to different ways of teaching depending on what interests them.
