Information About Anna - Edinburgh teacher - (2 reviews)
This is how 2 referees rated Anna:
I am a third year undergraduate studying History at Edinburgh University. During my time here I've also studied Classics, French and Architectural History at degree level, which has given me a broad grounding in philosophy, culture, literature and politics.
I'm a friendly, positive and responsible person. I have always been punctual and reliable, as my references testify. My interests include photography, dress-making, music, film and dance.
I am president of the university's Art Society and Culture Editor for The Student, the university's newspaper. Both of these roles require me to build and maintain working relationships with a wide variety of people and have helped me to develop excellent inter-personal skills. Working for the newspaper also means I have a lot of experience in helping people to improve their writing style.
This will be my first direct experience as a tutor, but my relevant experience includes:
Running health and hygiene workshops in primary and secondary schools in my role as Community Outreach Manager for Lush (2006-2009). This involved working in small groups and one-to-one with the children, as well as addressing large groups. I came up with activities such as songs, dances and role-play to make the workshops fun and accessible. It also taught me that children respond incredibly well to an enthusiastic approach.
Editing university publications: The Student and the Art Society Magazine (2009-2011). I have particularly enjoyed working closely with individual writers to help them improve their style. I can utilise this to help students improve their essay writing skills as well as more general English grammar skills.
I have a flexible approach to tutoring. I think the style of tutoring should always be based on the individual's aims and goals: whether they are aiming to improve grades for exams or just generally improve their skills in a certain subject, I am happy to write individual programmes of study. This would also be based around their preferred style of learning: some people respond to a hands-on approach, whereas some may be visual learners, and so on. I would always establish this in an initial session - perhaps with the parents present as well if appropriate - so I can make sure my tutoring is geared towards every individual's specific needs. Regardless of style, however, I feel that learning should be accessible and fun, and so I will always endeavour to provide an interesting and engaging learning environment.
