Personal Description:

I am a popular children’s author/illustrator and I divide my time between producing books and teaching creative writing for private students and for mixed groups in the adult education sector. I absolutely love doing both. My children’s fiction has been translated and published around the world, and I am privileged to have connected with readers who love stories as much as I do. My work is featured in the latest Hodder Education Primary English Literacy course book (alongside similar selected extracts by Roald Dahl and Michael Morpurgo) and this year I was among five writers shortlisted for the James Reckitt Hull Children's Book Award. I teach writing for all ages/abilities, and provide encouragement and practical advice. I also edit/proof manuscripts. I am married, with two teenage children and, before writing fiction, I worked as a journalist and magazine editor.

Teaching Experience:

I teach creative writing (beginner to advanced) for Kent Adult Education. I provide private tutoring in and around London, and advice for anyone interested in writing. I work regularly with libraries and schools (primary, KS1-KS2)) running creative workshops. I can also give help with illustration and book design, plus other aspects of publishing.

Teaching Approach:

No two writers are the same and your reasons for writing will be unique to you. However, I believe that writing should be rewarding whatever your motivations. I provide friendly and supportive help and aim to build your confidence.
Are you writing for personal fulfillment? Or pursuing an ambition to be published? I will try to help you achieve your goals whatever direction you decide to take. A couple of my previous students are now pursuing professional writing work having studied with me. I know, from personal experience, the satisfaction of connecting with a readership – I also know the work required to reach that point.
If you are struggling with particular aspects of your writing – or just can’t seem to progress – I will be able to help you. Often obstacles can be removed relatively easily, once they are identified.
If there is a project that you want to begin, but feel daunted by, we can look for good ways to go.
I currently teach all ability levels and all ages, so if you have a specific writing objective or just want to dip your toe in the water, do get in touch.
