Personal Description:
I completed my PhD in English Literature at the University of Southampton in September 2018, with a thesis focusing on twentieth-century poetry. Prior to that I graduated from Merton College, Oxford in 2012 with a BA Hons in English. My secondary school was Truro School where I gained three A-Levels in English (A), Maths (A), and Physics (A). I specialise in verse and verse translations, and am a published poet, but can help with any aspect of the creative process.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught at undergraduate and Master's levels from one-to-one tuition up to group seminars of approximately fifteen students. I have also privately tutored students from GCSEs to Master's.
Teaching Approach:
Writing is not mere self-expression, but is about creating something more than oneself. This can only be achieved by technique and diligence. Depending on the student's needs I can offer a full introduction to the history of poetry or poetic meter, a wide array of English verse techniques, forms, or genres, or we can take a more relaxed approach and deal directly with the material to hand. One of the greatest assets one can have as a writer is a reader you can trust, and so often the most important aspect of teaching creative writing is in reading and commenting on drafts or completed pieces.
