Zenobia

My name is Zenobia (after the 2nd century CE empress, if you have done your homework!). I obtained my PhD from the London School of Oriental and African Studies. I have always tried to aim high and as a result achieved outstanding results. I graduated high school (in the Netherlands) cum laude, taking 14 subjects in my final year, with the equivalent of an A in Ancient Civilisations, History and Art History (among other subjects!). I also got the highest mark in my school’s history on the IB A2 English certificate. My secondary school dissertation on ancient Greek art in modern media was ranked 3rd nationally, and I achieved a 1st on both my BA and MPhil dissertations.

Tutoring Experience

During my BA I tutored IT, but soon moved on to teach Archaeology. I have taught students aged 5-65 how to dig trenches and handle archaeological equipment. More to the point, I have taught seminars on history as well as several ancient languages (I am familiar with Latin, Greek, Egyptian Hieroglyphics, Old Norse, various forms of Akkadian, as well as a few others). I also worked as a clarinet instructor for two years!

At the moment I am primarily teaching Classical Civilisation but I am open to discussing other subjects, especially if the curriculum involves ancient Mesopotamia.

Tutoring Approach

My teaching philosophy is to adapt to the student: find their interests and explore them, in order to improve. I find that enthusiasm and memory are closely linked, which is why computer games and movies may often seem more attractive than schoolbooks. The key is to step outside the curriculum and gather the materials that will ultimately allow the student to rise above exams instead of struggling to complete them.
