Online English and Drama Tutor

I have been a private tutor for 8 years. Prior to this, I was a theatre director, drama teacher and playwright. I have worked in regional and touring theatres and larger theatres in London and the South East, directing plays for adults, young people and children and founded a young people's creative writing and performance company. I have also worked in the mental health sector and in Healing Arts. I am a creative writer, have published two novels and am working on my third. Education and training: University of Reading English Literature BA (Hons) 1st Class, Regional Theatres Trainee Directors' Scheme bursary (2 years in regional theatres), TESOL Certificate Trinity College London.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught English Language and Literature and Drama from GCSE through to university level, and English as a Second Language (also known as TEFL - English as a Foreign Language) - the last to both private students and classes at TORQUAY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL (2016/17). I have been a guest director and teacher at Guildford School of Acting, The Royal Scottish Academy (now the Conservatoire), Rose Bruford, LAMDA, ALRA and Italia Conti. I have also coached students for the English component of the American University SAT entrance exam.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is to get to know the student, her/his strengths and weaknesses and which approach to learning will suit the individual best. If a student requires extra coaching, often their confidence and self-esteem need nurturing toward the belief that s/he can excel. Working in drama taught me that channeling a student's creativity improves their enthusiasm for and engagement with a subject. My lessons are always enjoyable - I like students to improve their confidence but also to go away with smiles on their faces.

While I am not an expert in autism, I have taught several students on varying shades of the spectrum with successful outcomes.
Until the pandemic has settled to an acceptable r level, I will be teaching online only.
