Les

I have a Law degree from the University of Warwick but decided not to go into practice. After a career of 14 years in banking in London, I retrained as a secondary school teacher and spent nine years in schools teaching mainly music before switching back to Law, which I taught in a school for one year and a sixth form college for a further nine years. I was made redundant in 2011 and took early retirement but continued to teach Law part-time, both in that college and in various schools. After my final year of Law in a school in 2020/21 I was asked to go back there to teach a Financial Studies course before retiring altogether in 2022. I have also coached a number of students privately for A-level Law, initially face-to-face but switching to on-line (Teams) when I moved to a different part of the country following retirement.

Tutoring Experience

In my 20 years of teaching Law, a large number of my students have gone on to study the subject at University and some have been kind enough to say that they owe much of their success to my teaching and enthusiasm. Prior to 2017 I taught the AQA syllabus and was also an AQA examiner in 2013 and 2014. More recently I have taught the OCR syllabus (including the contract law option for the final paper) and in both 2021/22 and 2022/23 had private students studying for both boards. Of my three students in 2022/23 two achieved A's and the third got a B.

Tutoring Approach

The joy of private tutoring is that it allows me to tailor my approach specifically to the needs and preferred learning style of the particular student. Although development of skills is important, Law is quite content-heavy in terms of knowing statutes, procedures and cases and I do not pretend that there are any short cuts. My style is fairly straightforward and traditional, but this does not preclude a few laughs along the way. I have a very full set of materials, including notes, Powerpoints and revision activities, which are regularly added to and updated. I also make much use of past exam papers so that students can see exactly what sort of thing to expect and how to go about delivering the sort of answers that examiners give high marks for. Although I quote an hourly rate, I often find that a 90 minute session is more useful and I give a discount on this.
