Helen

I like to define myself as a crossover artist, specializing in contemporary/classical performance. As a multi reed player, I am experienced in the recorder, flute and saxophone but it is the clarinet that I specialize in.

My career is split fairly equally between performing and teaching at the moment. At the age of 24, I have been performing professionally for 7 years. Some of my highlights include performing to an audience of 2,000 people as a soloist in the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, touring Europe, visiting Spain, France, Italy and Holland with my clarinet trio SHE and touring with the pop-synth star of the 80's, Marc Almond. Awards that I have obtained include Liverpool's Young Instrumentalist of the Year (2010) and silver place in The East Coast Musician of the Year (2014).

I'm really relaxed, approachable and down-to-earth! When students are wishing to develop a skill they're struggling with, no problem or insecurity is too big for me - I love a challenge!

Tutoring Experience

As a woodwind tutor, I have taught across Merseyside and Yorkshire for the past 7 years. I have experience in teaching across primary schools and secondary schools as well as in private music centres or from my own home. Throughout my career so far, I have also worked in community settings delivering music workshops to groups of people. Most of my experience in the community has been with adults suffering from mental health related illnesses and more recently, dementia. It has been so rewarding to deliver weekly sessions to these people and is one of my favourite aspects of being a freelance musician.

I am also a popular workshop leader and ensemble coach across the North West of England. I work heavily in schools directing large ensembles such as wind bands and orchestras. My proudest moment was when my year 7 and 8 training band won their first competition in The Wirral Music Festival in 2013.

I currently teach between Liverpool and Yorkshire and work within 5 schools.

Tutoring Approach

I will cater to your needs in a very personalized manner. No two lesson plans I create are identical. They are catered for the individual. With each student/parent, I like to create a relaxed and friendly (yet professional) vibe. It is important for students to feel comfortable in my company to get the best learning experience as well as feeling like they are getting quality tuition through my concise lesson plans, handouts and personalized exercises that you will receive off me weekly.

I take my lead from you! The initial lesson will involve me getting a feel for your strengths and weaknesses, musically, and most importantly, what you want to achieve. This may be to become proficient at a well known solo or beginning your journey up the ladder of graded exams. Maybe your child would like some support with their GCSE or A Level studies. Whatever your request, I will deliver!

After getting to know each other, I like to structure lessons so that technique, musicality and theory is all incorporated. Again, each student is different and we will work as a partnership devising appropriate exercises and activities to improve your playing - always with the objective of having fun with a few laughs along the way!
