Personal Description:

Hello! My name is Tarryn , and I am an energetic 25-year-old. I spent most of 2018 in Canada, where I was completing the coursework component of my Master's Degree in Comparative Philosophy (I am due to graduate in June 2019). My first two degrees were in English, Psychology and Philosophy (at the University of Cape Town), and I am currently completing my Post-Graduate Certificate in Education at Wits.

My experience in tutoring both one-on-one, and in the context of a classroom, has cemented my belief in the importance of education in fostering both individual and societal flourishing. However, I am strongly opposed to the maxim, "Only marks matter",insofar as it inculcates in learners a desire to achieve in the name of a symbol, rather than the love of ideas or as a stepping stone in a meaningful life plan. My approach to education is thus more one of "mining" than "banking" - that is, as a tutor, I consider my role to be one of unearthing my students' innate potential, rather than "depositing" facts into empty vessels.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring in a one-on-one capacity for seven years. While studying in Cape Town, I worked primarily with a single family, tutoring their first daughter through matric, and subsequently working with the family's two younger children for a further three years. In Johannesburg, I have worked in a one-on-one context with students aged 13 through to matric, in IEB, NSC and Cambridge syllabi. I have also worked in a formal classroom context at a high school level (Grades 8 and 11) at Redhill High School in Sandton and De La Salle College in Linden, as well as at a university level, as a tutor for First Year Philosophy students, both here (at Wits) and in Canada (at Brock University, where I completed my Masters). My areas of expertise are English and Maths, as well as history, biology, Afrikaans and French. At a university level, I have experience tutoring in Philosophy, as well as English and Psychology.

Tutoring Approach:

In my past experience, students who are looking for a tutor tend to have their educational needs intertwined with psychological ones. My approach to tutoring is thus holistic - aiming to manage the psychological aspects of the client's educational development - and very individualized. For instance, if a client is feeling overwhelmed by her work, and lacks organizational capacity, my first step will be goal-setting, and breaking down these goals into manageable, concrete steps to be taken.

I tend not to take on multiple clients: this is because I endeavour, in my work, to create a close relationship with my students. I also spend a lot of time outside of lessons preparing for upcoming classes and designing worksheets and other resources, which places additional restrictions on my time. However, above all else, it is important for my clients to feel that I am available to them when they need me; as such, in addition to regular lessons, I try and make myself available outside of lesson time for whatsapps or emails concerning queries to do with the work covered in our previous lessons.

In terms of the content of my lessons, my primary emphasis is on the development of subject-specific skills, rather than the mere acquisition of content: it is my hope that, with my help, my students will develop into competent, effective thinkers rather than mere rote learners.
