Personal Description:

Hello! My name is Tarryn , and I am an energetic 25-year-old female. I have just returned from a year abroad in Canada, where I was completing the coursework component of my Master's Degree in Comparative Philosophy (I have since returned to South Africa, to work on my thesis). Prior to this, I completed my Honours degree in Psychology at the University of Cape Town (UCT), as well as my BSocSci in English, Psychology and Philosophy, also at UCT. My experience in tutoring both one-on-one, and in the context of a classroom, has cemented my belief in the importance of education in fostering both individual and societal flourishing - in fact, not only have I experienced the deep satisfaction that comes with seeing my individual clients succeed, but I have also been active in campaigning for education equality in South Africa (during my university years I served as chairperson of the NGO Equal Education)! When I am not musing on how to reform our education system, or thinking about individual clients, I am often found reading, learning Zulu, meditating, running/exercising, playing with four-legged creatures, debating philosophy, or preparing for my Post-Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE - for which I will be registering at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2019).

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring in a one-on-one capacity for nearly seven years.

During my years in Cape Town, this was primarily with a single family: I tutored their first daughter for two years, right through to matric; following this, I worked with the family's two younger children for a further three years.

I have worked with three other families in Johannesburg: in the one case, the client suffered from extreme anxiety as well as what appeared to be a learning disorder. Working with this young woman really gave me a taste for the challenges some children face in their educational development: it also endowed me with invaluable experience in working with clients with mental health difficulties, as well as remedial needs.

In terms of a formal classroom context, I have taught English at a high school level (Grade 8 and Grade 11) in the capacity of a teaching assistant and substitute teacher, at Redhill High School in Sandton, Johannesburg (during my gap year). However, by far my most extensive teaching experience in a formal classroom setting took place in Canada, where I taught a two classes of 20 first year philosophy students, for two hours each week.

My areas of expertise are primarily English and Maths (with the latter at a university level, in addition to high school English); however, I have also successfully tutored history, biology, Afrikaans and French, at levels ranging from Grade 7 to Grade 12. In addition to teaching philosophy at university, I also have some experience tutoring psychology at a university level.

Tutoring Approach:

In both my one-on-tutoring, and teaching in a classroom, I take the time to prepare before the lesson; I also spend time outside of lessons designing worksheets and other, similar supplements for learning, depending on the needs of the client. I also try and make myself available outside of lesson time for whatsapps or emails concerning minor queries to do with the work covered - ideally, I would like my student to have a sense that I am always available, in some capacity, to help.

In my one-on-one tutoring, I tend not to take on multiple clients: this is because I endeavour, in my work, to create a close relationship with my students. This helps me to gauge fully their educational needs; working closely with a few students also keeps me available for those emergency "night-before-the-test/exam" cram sessions (although, hopefully, these will become increasingly unnecessary).

In my past experience, students who are looking for a tutor tend to have their educational needs intertwined with psychological ones: for instance, I have worked with children who have had low self-esteem due to their poor marks, culminating in a lack of self-confidence, and an overall sense of failure. My approach to tutoring is thus holistic - aiming to manage the psychological aspects of the client's educational development - and very individualised. For instance, if a client is feeling overwhelmed by her work, and lacks organisational capacity, my first step will be goal-setting, and breaking down these goals into manageable, concrete steps to be taken. In my experience, this tends to lead to an increased sense of self-sufficiency, and a heightened belief in one's ability to succeed.

My primary aim in my approach to tutoring is, above all, to help my clients believe in themselves and their abilities. Every person is different, and will require different approaches; however, in working closely with the client - in taking them seriously, and treating them as an individual - I have seen remarkable improvements not only in the marks achieved, but also in their overall confidence and sense of self-sufficiency.
