Personal Description:
I am a Chemical Engineering student at the University of the Witwatersrand, where I've built a strong foundation in chemistry, process design, and analytical problem-solving. Beyond my academic focus, I have a deep-seated interest in mentoring and education, having spent time as a tutor and peer mentor. I thrive on breaking down complex ideas into understandable concepts, whether I'm in a laboratory, a classroom, or a team project. I'm a naturally curious and diligent individual, always eager to learn new skills and take on challenges that allow me to grow and make a tangible impact. In my free time, I enjoy reading and exploring how science and technology can be applied to solve real-world problems
Tutoring Experience:
I have served as a Peer Mentor and Mathematics Tutor since January 2024, providing academic support to high school. In this role, I facilitated individual and group learning sessions, focusing on mathematics and physical sciences. I specialized in breaking down complex concepts into understandable components, developing personalized learning strategies for diverse learners, and maintaining detailed progress records. This experience strengthened my ability to communicate technical information clearly, adapt explanations to different learning styles, and foster supportive educational environments while demonstrating patience, leadership, and knowledge transfer skills.
Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring philosophy is centered on building confidence through understanding, with the belief that students learn most effectively when they discover solutions themselves, guided by structured support. I begin by identifying foundational gaps through diagnostic questions and active listening, allowing me to tailor explanations to each student's unique way of thinking whether visual, practical, or theory-based. During sessions, I focus on breaking down complex problems into manageable steps, using real-life examples to make abstract concepts relatable, encouraging questions to foster curiosity and critical thinking, and providing constructive feedback that highlights strengths and areas for improvement. Additionally, I emphasize study techniques and time management to equip students with the skills needed for independent learning. My goal extends beyond academic success to inspiring a lasting interest in the subject.
