My years of experience as a teacher and head of maths department at a large school have given me a feel for the experiences of learners in maths – I know of their hopes and also their frustrations. I am well-positioned to offer them the help and encouragement they need.
In coaching and mentoring learners in maths and maths literacy both in person and online, I have had positive interaction with many learners and earned their trust.
Over a number of years of training adults in maths and maths literacy, I have used creative ideas to make maths come alive and helped to change the image of maths as a fearful threat.
In writing online maths material and co-authoring textbooks, I have found simple and effective ways to lead learners along the quickest route to understanding concepts.

My passion is helping a learner to enjoy maths and achieve the best they can. I do this by moving at a pace that suits them, bearing in mind their particular goals. Each learner is different, so I do not use the same approach for all. I am familiar with the CAPS requirements and best teaching practice, and I involve the learner in two-way discussion in a non-threatening way. I feel I have succeeded when they reach the 'aha' moment, and are able to apply what they have learnt.
