Personal Description:

Hello! My name is Lisa Mary and I love the English language. I'm a teacher, writer and poet who is busy working on an anthology of poems and a children's book. When I have time, I enjoy writing thought-provoking articles for online magazines, too. I've worked as a freelance proofreader and copy-editor and I currently do transcription of audio tapes. I'm also a professional artist and have taught both art and piano lessons in the past.

I did a CELTA course a few years back to learn to teach non-English speakers, but I'm just as keen to help English-speaking or other South African people understand our wonderful language better. It makes me happy to see a person's face light up with understanding - this is the prize.

I've taught English to children in Thailand, to adult refugees in Durban and given free online lessons to all kinds of people. Right now I'm looking forward to teaching face-to-face right here in Cape Town. I'm happy to teach online when your need is conversational lessons, although having your teacher in the room with you has many advantages.

I'm well-traveled, adventurous and love animals. My experiences have given me empathy and understanding towards all kinds of people.

Tutoring Experience:

-Free online lessons worldwide - this was very relaxed teaching on fun, multi-lingual platforms.

-Thailand, 2018. Primary school children. I taught 5 subjects in English: Science, Maths, English, Art and Health. The children were absolute beginners and expected by the school to learn all their subjects in English. This was very difficult for them, but I made it fun by being as practical as possible. Children learn best with visual aids, games and lots of interesting speaking practice. For that matter, adults do, too!

Tutoring Approach:

The most fun I've had was teaching a one month class of French-speaking people who had basic English knowledge, but needed lot of help with pronunciation and learning new vocabulary. The funny mistakes they made actually aided learning, because the students never forgot these lessons. I believe in the power of mistakes! When you're relaxed with me, we can laugh together and then quickly fix the problem.

I like to start off with a conversational lesson. We just chat. If you have specific needs, this is a chance to tell me what they are. In conversation, I will pick up where you need help and start to work on the best possible lessons to get you there quickly. Even in the first conversational lesson, I'll be teaching you and building up your confidence while we practice saying the sentences correctly. This is especially useful if English isn't your first language.

If your problem is understanding grammar, we'll take it step-by-step and break down sentences until you understand the concepts that are tricky. I try to make it easy by tailor-making your lessons. Grammar is not that hard - we just don't always have the most patient teachers in school.

Some students speak well, but battle with reading, writing or listening in English. I use visual aids, written material and music to help with these things.

You'll find me down-to-earth, happy and easy to talk to… the kind of teacher I wished for once upon a time!
