Personal Description:

I am currently studying a BCom in Information Systems through UNISA. I have been a competitive swimmer for the last 7 years, with the goal of qualifying for the paralympics, but no longer. It took over my life for a few years, as it required a huge amount of dedication, so studying took a backseat during that time. I got a distinction for maths in high school, and majored in maths and applied maths at UCT for 2 years before I realised that that level of maths wasn't for me. I am a very calm and patient individual, which is reflected in the way I teach, and I think it helps in putting students at ease with regards to any concerns they have with their maths, which can be very helpful!

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring maths for just under 3 years now. With the majority of my students being in primary school, the highest being grade 9. I know I said I am available for High School as well, but I wouldn't be comfortable tutoring grade 11 and 12 students. There is probably too much that has changed or that I do not remember, especially the geometry side of things. Calculus or any paper 1 topics would be fine though.

Tutoring Approach:

When it comes to maths, the saying, practice makes perfect, couldn't be more fitting. I like to guide my students through a few questions, and once they're more confident with the topic, give them more challenging problems to solve on their own. The more questions you're exposed to, the less chance there is of being surprised in a test. I explain things where needed, and after a few questions, I'll have a better idea of where the understanding is lacking. One of the most annoying things about maths, when you aren't that confident with it, is that you're always doubting your answers. So having someone to check your work and to explain where you may have gone wrong is a massive benefit, and something I enjoyed about having a maths tutor in school. I struggled with maths all the way up until grade 11, so I know what it feels like! I would really to like to help as many students as I can to not have the same experience I had!
