The last principal that I worked under said of me:
‘One hallmark of his teaching was his exceptional creativity while another was his ability to motivate children - at times to extraordinary levels, thus enabling his pupils to achieve particularly high standards.’ - Niels Frylinck
To be honest that is someone else's observation and it is often reliable.
I believe that with all the many things I have done in my life, all reasonably successfully, teaching has been and will always be my first love.
I return to tutoring passionate excited and able to give so much more because of my very diverse career path.
I'm a dad of an 11 year old in Grade 5,(and a 35 year old LLB Masters), my knowledge of syllabus and curriculum is current and I am aware of the pitfalls and challenges facing learners and parents alike.
I hold a 4 year Higher Diploma of Education from JCE/Wits.
I have taught primary grades 4-8 (English, Biology, Art) and I have taught grades 11 and 12 (English and Biology) as a substitute teacher.
Once a teacher, always a teacher.
I believe that most struggles in a subject in the classroom begin because the learner is not stimulated and their attention is not held. More often than not this is NOT the learners fault.
I approach at the learner holistically. That is, in a way that is characterised by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.
I determine the strengths and weaknesses in a subject and through compassion and empathy I establish the missing links or the missed foundation blocks.
Using stimulating methods I, with the learners help, go about assisting the learner to make the connections and fill the gaps.
Grammar might start with the lyrics of a hip and popular song.
The life cycle of the poppy might start with a walk down the road and finding a poppy on the pavement.
In English I don't only teach the required grammar, I share the love of literature and poetry, so lacking in our textual technology saturated lives.
