I am a qualified and working Chemical Engineer, but have a great passion for teaching others. My students can earn back money when they put in the effort. During High School and University I was the person everybody came to for explanations. I have a little sister in Grade 8, which I love dearly and help her with her maths. The joy I find in seeing children and young adults learning new things and being able to use this knowledge, compels me to give something back into the community. In 2016 I was awarded the mentor of the year award in my engineering environment.
I am a qualified Chemical Engineer, so I have completed advanced mathematics, physics and chemistry.
I was a tutor for two years at the university of Potchefstroom, tutoring undergraduate engineering students.
I have coached and mentored multiple people in my engineering work environment.
The past three years I have been teaching a work related course to a large variety of working individuals. For the whole of 2016, I was an ongoing and consistent tutor for a student in Grade 12, so I am up to date with the current school mathematical curriculum.
I believe almost anyone can be good at mathematics, but most of us are not because of small things we have not learned in earlier years. Teachers or Lecturers don’t have the time to find those missing pieces of the puzzle for every student and if those missing pieces are part of the foundation, the student will have immense struggles in learning and applying new mathematical concepts. The missing foundation leads to defeat against maths, where it could easily have been an enriching and empowering journey. In tutoring we have the ability to find the missing piece and put the puzzle back together so that the student has a strong foundation. Many times I have seen how the same student whom hated mathematics, start telling me that they enjoy solving the problems now. This is my greatest reward.
To achieve this though, the student needs to be committed to him/herself and therefore I have created an incentive structure for them. Based on their performance increase and effort into practicing the new concepts, they will get a percentage back of the money they spent on tutoring (into their own pockets). If I have 2 sessions a week of 1 hour each at my current hourly rate, and they achieve their pre-set goals, they could earn back more than R 2 000 at the end of the term (3 Months). Each student has a file which we will compile together as we progress through the work. This file functions as a summary for the work we have done together, teach the student how to summarize maths and greatly reduce the time required to study for tests and exams.
I am committed to adding value, not earning more money. This is my way of investing into our next generation, whom will one day lead the country and create the South Africa we all would like to live in.
