Personal Description:

I am a current full-time teacher in a city school, with a passion for teaching both remedial and extension English and Math at Primary level. As my teenager has become more independent, I have enjoyed working on a 1-1 basis with a number of additional, private students during evenings and weekends.

Tutoring Experience:

Approximately 12 years at Yrs 0,2,3, and 4. I have also taught GATE programmes with Yr 5 and 6, including Philosophy and Future problem Solving. I no longer teach FPS, but regularly evaluate for the programme, so can support primary students with their work in this area. I have taught both extension math at Yr 4, and low ability math at Yr 2 and 3. I have had many opportunities to work with and develop reading strategies and skills for students with special needs, or who just need extra support with getting the reading started. In my classroom programme, I use novels to engage students and teach rich literacy experiences. I have worked 1-1 with a number of gifted students to support them with enrichment and/or extension, as well as to build successful strategies for overcoming learning barriers such as dyslexia.

Tutoring Approach:

Relationships are key foundations to learning, so I spend time finding out about students' interests and skills. I feel it is important to share a passion for reading and writing, in order to light a fire in students minds. Learning to read, write and develop numeracy knowledge takes time, patience and bravery. I love to identify and adapt resources to meet individual needs, and am able to make connections across a number of learning experiences to build skills as well as joy and confidence. I am really keen to integrate key knowledge that a young person may need to access the curriculum that is under current study in their school classroom, as to boost their confidence and ability to maximise school learning experiences. I strongly believe that a little bit of work, every day, builds a strong foundation, so am very happy to continue working with students over longer holiday breaks to keep them in top-tip shape for a successful return to school.
