Personal Description:

I am a NZ and UK qualified teacher with more than 15 years' experience teaching Physics, Science and Maths internationally. I recently returned to NZ from a 3 year stint overseas as the Director of Science at South Korea's most prestigious boarding school.
I am passionate about the outdoors and education, so it has been exciting to return home to the clean air, beautiful environment and exciting geology of NZ. Between teaching jobs, my other career has been in Outdoor Recreation and Education as an outdoor guide and instructor, so I like to relate academic subjects to real-life experiences or activities. My hobbies all revolve around adventure, travelling, sports and the outdoors: whitewater kayaking; mountain biking; soccer / football; skiing / snowboarding and rock climbing to name just a few… As a tutor & real person you will find that I am: honest; friendly; relatable; flexible; organised and passionate about everything that I do.

Tutoring Experience:

15 years' experience professionally teaching and tutoring in UK, NZ and South Korea. NZ registered and qualified teacher since 2007, UK qualified since 2004.
2019 onwards: Teacher of Physics & Science in Taranaki, NZ.
2015 - 2018: Director of Science at South Korea's most prestigious boarding school, delivering IB and IGCSE courses in Jeju, SK.
2007 - 2015: Teacher in Charge of Physics (NCEA Levels 2-3), Science & Maths Teacher (NCEA Level 1 & Junior) and Professional Tutor (Scholarship Physics, NCEA Level 2 Chemistry, Junior Maths & English) in Central Otago, NZ.
2003 - 2006: Physics & Science Teacher in Wales, UK.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching values are:
-respect: build a learning relationship between tutor and students;
-challenge: develop students as independent learners (making the tutor's role redundant!);
-engage: breakdown, simplify and relate concepts to students' real-life experiences and use a variety of teaching tools (including resources from students' schools, practical and online resources).
I differentiate tutorials to the students in front of me. Some want to focus on preparing for assessments, others prefer to discuss and throw ideas around for the joy of learning, I am flexible.
