Personal Description:

My name is Jay and I am currently studying a conjoint degree of Law and Arts (majoring in International Relations and Political Studies) at Victoria University of Wellington. I have been awarded high grades throughout my degree, and next year I am beginning a Masters program.

Previously I have lived in Christchurch, Auckland, and Australia. I received all of my high school education in New Zealand at Westlake Boys High School, where I sat A-level exams in English Literature, History, Economics, and Mandarin Chinese. I was a top student across all subjects, but particularly in English literature and the social sciences.

I finished high school in 2015 and spent my first year out of school working with World Vision New Zealand as a Youth Ambassador. I travelled with them to Jordan where I spent time in refugee camps and communities gathering stories, which I have spent thetime since sharing in schools all over the country. After this, I moved to Wellington to begin further study in Law and International Relations to be able to advance my work with NGOs in both New Zealand and overseas.

Outside of academics I am a big fan of sports and getting out into nature. I am an avid runner and love watching basketball, football and cricket. My favourite thing to do is head out on a multi-day tramp in the New Zealand bush.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a private tutor for the last four years and have taught a high number of students in this time, both through private tutoring companies and school run programmes. I have tutored high schoolers and primary students in a wide range of subjects across the Cambridge and NCEA systems.

I have had nothing but positive feedback for my services and all of my customers have been repeating sessions over a series of months or years. All of these students have seen an increase in their skills and grades as a result of our work together, and I am extremely proud of what they have been able to achieve.

Tutoring Approach:

I take a very personalised approach based on the needs and existing skill set of the student at hand, as well as their style of learning. As such my lesson structures are variable but generally follow a similar pattern.

My base approach for high schoolers is one of weekly homework exercises done by the student, with the tutoring sessions acting as an opportunity for feedback and guidance based on practical exercises. This allows the student to get the most out of the tutoring session. Rather than simply doing an exercise under my supervision, it allows the student and I to properly discuss their strengths and weaknesses with no wasted time.

For primary students there is less independent work and more of a focus on working through exercises together. There is more of a focus on 'teaching' rather than discussion. This allows me to immediately pick up on areas where they're making mistakes and stop any bad habits from at all developing.

With all age groups I am extremely personable and avoid any sort of hard-line approaches. I work with the student to make sure they feel they're learning, and develop hopefully not just skills but also a passion for the subject. Learning shouldn't be a chore and hopefully, I can help my students develop a lifelong love for their subject.
