Personal Description:

My name is Jamie and I am a qualified primary school teacher. I am from the USA and have lived in Charlotte, North Carolina for the past 8 years. I recently moved back to Christchurch with my husband and son in August 2017. I previously lived in Christchurch from 2006-2008 when I was completely my teacher training. I have been living in Canada and the USA for the past decade. I am happy to be back in New Zealand and look forward to offering tutoring sessions to primary aged students.

Tutoring Experience:

For the past six years, I worked as a 3rd grade teacher (ages 8-9) at an independent school in Davidson, North Carolina. Woodlawn School is a project based school with an integrated curriculum. I taught English (grammar, spelling, reading, writing), math, science, and social studies. Before teaching at Woodlawn, I taught academically gifted students ages 9-11 years old. I have also worked as a tutor in a school setting, for students that needed additional support in math and reading. Additionally, I have worked in preschools and worked as reliever in schools throughout Christchurch. I have experience teaching children from preschool to age 12. I have taught a variety of subjects both to large and small groups of students.

Tutoring Approach:

It is most important to me to first build a relationship with students that I am tutoring. Since tutoring is additional work on top of an already busy school day, I want my students to not only feel comfortable with me, but to also have fun while learning. While I do think a lot of the tutoring sessions with be teacher driven, I believe it's important to give students some freedom in how and what they learn. For example, if a student is needing additional support in reading and writing, I would prefer they set the tone for what interests them instead of having me choose for them. I believe that giving students some choice and control is important to their success. It is also important that I get to know what kind of learner the student is and to follow their lead. I want tutoring sessions to feel like an opportunity to learn something new, in a different way. I look forward to working with new students and developing a plan that works best for them.
