Personal Description:

To Whom It May Concern
My name is Huia I have been in the teaching profession since the Year 2000. In this time, I have taught all Year levels from 0-8, and worked with a wide range of learners with individual needs and social behaviours.
Ever since graduating in 2000, I have been passionate in my commitment to the following three areas: Maximising individual student performance in all areas of class learning, inspiring student’s interest in literacy which is my personal passion, and instilling a sense of resilience in all students in my care.
My teaching practice also includes relieving within the wider Auckland area. Relieving is quite a skill as you need to be flexible in not only your availability to schools for continuity, but also in lesson planning as this can change as the day progresses. It is important to be adept in all learning situations and with a wide range of learning needs.

Tutoring Approach:

It is my aim to combine my range of experience with my ability to be an intuitive tutor. One who has friendly, encouraging manner, and is well-prepared for all lessons. But at the same time has a good sense of humour which goes a long way in any lesson. I am especially good at assessing what the next steps should be, while remaining adaptable to assignments that need to be attended to in the course of the lesson.

What I consider to be important for tutoring:

 Always be friendly and welcoming before a tutoring session begins, by asking how their day has gone etc
 Important to make the student comfortable and at ease in the warm up part of the lesson.
 Being planned with how the lesson is going to proceed with the necessary resources.
 Always listen to what the students needs are and teach accordingly.
 Flexibility is key when in the actual learning time and attend to learning areas that arise.
 Progression in learning steps.
 Monitoring progress and ongoing evaluation.
 Give consistent feedback about learning, it is important to be genuinely encouraging with the student.
 In the warm down leave the student with an encouraging statement about their learning, and where to next.
 Ask the student how they thought the lesson went and is there any other area of concern for them or something they would like to do different!

Even I need feedback for effective planning and teaching that is honest and open.
