Personal Description:

I am a 28 year old fully qualified Actuary living in Auckland Central. I studied Physics and Statistics at University, and went on to study and work as an actuary for 4 years before fully qualifying. I got through my actuarial exams without failing and over that time developed very good strategies and tools for studying and doing well in exams.

I am also a keen musician, I play guitar and sing in a band, and also play the bagpipes and piano. I used to skateboard competitively and play rep hockey, both of which are too dangerous for me now at my age :P

Tutoring Experience:

Before I worked full time, I developed strategies to pass my own exams, my peers at boarding school realised that I was very good at explaining complex concepts (part of why I went on to become an actuary as this is a very useful skill in this field), so I tutored my peers at boarding school to start with.

I then worked as a tutor for a number of years, working for a company called Big Picture Learning and Ardent Education in Dunedin and Auckland respectively.

I also have a little brother who even though it seems like his ears are painted on most of the time, seems to listen when I tutor him.

Tutoring Approach:

I started off as an average student, and went on to eventually get straight A*'s and A+'s at university. I found developing a passion for these subjects and understanding the key concepts instead of just ro**Contact Detail Removed**arning things was key to my success.

I am a very big believer in understanding key concepts and putting these together to answer questions. I am not a fan of ro**Contact Detail Removed**arning (unless it is absolutely necessary i.e. last minute tutoring before an exam). I also have never been someone who grinds past exams, as I never had to. I found that if I focused on understanding the key concepts first, then whatever questions they throw at you, seemed easy even if you hadn't seen them before. Where as ro**Contact Detail Removed**arning requires a grind, learning to answer every single possible question they can throw your way. I tend to use past papers or example questions as a way to learn the key concepts.

I also think it's really important to build rapport with a student, it's important to understand the student in order to understand how to communicate information to them effectively. I am especially experienced at dealing with students who are not confident in their own abilities, as I can relate to them having personally gone from someone who didn't take education seriously to studying for 15 years to qualify as an actuary.
