Personal Description:

I'm a Classical Studies and History Cambridge International Examinations specialist (CIE) across all senior year levels (IGCSE, AS and A-level), however I also have years of experience teaching NCEA (level 2 and 3) and NZQA Scholarship (Classics and History). Alongside providing assistance with content, my expertise is in Essay Writing technique and structure.

I trained at the University of Auckland between 2008-2013, completing a BA(Hons) double major in Ancient History/Anthropology, achieving a First-Class honours degree, alongside a Senior Scholar top in Ancient History award, and a summer scholarship worth $5,000.

In my spare time (outside of my current teaching job), I am an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy, enjoy most sports - particularly Rugby League - and have been playing guitar for over 15 years. I am also a father to a beautiful 8-month old girl.

Tutoring Experience:

My current employment is at St Peter's College in Auckland. I have been working here since 2014, where I currently am sole charge Teacher In Charge of Classics and Latin, teaching Senior Cambridge Classics in year 12, 13 and Scholarship. I have also previously taught Cambridge history to years 11-13. Alongside this role, I also currently oversee our entire Scholarship program at the college as Teacher in Charge of Scholarship.

Some notable teaching achievements include:
- A current average of 73% of my A-level students achieving between A*-A grade (from a cohort of 17 students last year)
- A current average of 72% of my AS-students achieving an A or higher (from a current cohort of 25 students last year)
- 11 Scholarships in Classics achieved in 2021, across years 11-13 - yes, a year 11 student I taught gained a Scholarship.
- in 2020, one of my students achieved the Top Scholar in Scholarship Classics (23/24 was his score)
- over the past 5 years, I have averaged 9 students gaining Scholarships in Classics annually across years 12 and 13.
- in 2016, one of my A-level students gained a Top in the World award for A-level Classics (scoring 97%)
- in 2018, one of my AS students gained a Top in the World award for AS Classics (scoring 96%).
- I have had 4 students achieve Top in NZ Cambridge awards for Classics over the past 5 years
- On the back of these achievements, I was awarded a teaching excellence scholarship from St Peter's at our EoY prizegiving worth $5,000 that enabled me to visit two schools in the Bronx in New York in 2019.

Suffice it to say that I bring with me a wealth of content knowledge, specialist expertise, resources, and years of refining technical application to essay writing.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is predicated on my teaching philosophy and pedagogy: that every learner, irrespective of ability, has the capacity for excellence. It is my joy and pleasure to be able to help them unlock the ability, driven by helping my students develop confidence in their content knowledge, and most importantly, in their essay writing. It is true that marks are won and lost on the application of content knowledge under exam conditions, and that is where I have honed my years of experience to create a simple to follow - and easy to apply - set of essay writing principles to make all learners confident and sophisticated writers.

I am a patient listener, with a calm and measured approach. I am incredibly approachable, non-judgmental and enjoy using jokes to build relationships. This is how I run my classroom.

I bring with me 10 years of teaching experience alongside 5 years of university training. I have a wealth of the highest quality resources, text books, and content knowledge on a diverse range of subject areas in History and Classical studies especially. Whilst I am a Cambridge curriculum specialist, I am also proficient in NCEA Level 2/3 and most importantly NZQA Scholarship Classics and History.
