Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Tim. I am a first year DPhil candidate in Organic Chemistry at the University of Oxford. I have just graduated with a First Class Honours (82%) Bachelor's degree in Medicinal Chemistry from Trinity College Dublin, and I am eager to provide high-quality online grinds to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year university students taking organic chemistry exams.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been a chemistry tutor for over a year, teaching a wide range of chemistry students across all years of undergraduate study. Many of these students were from courses other than chemistry who were taking an organic chemistry course, and I have tailored their lessons to best fit their needs. As a graduate of the Medicinal Chemistry moderatorship at Trinity, I am quite familiar with each year's chemistry syllabus as well as with the style of questions and marking schemes used by each lecturer.

In addition, I worked as a tennis coach for two summers at Nike Tennis Camps in the US, as well as at a tennis club in New York during the summers before that. From these roles, I have learned how to identify areas in which my students need practice, how to break down the difficult concepts into concise and straight-forward explanations, and how to effectively convey these ideas to my students. These skills make my lessons highly productive without becoming overwhelming, thus allowing my students to rapidly progress through difficult material.I worked as a tennis coach for two summers at Nike Tennis Camps in the US, as well as at a tennis club in New York during the summers before that. Approach to Grinds:

Chemistry is a problem-based field of science. Whether it's solving equations or drawing reaction mechanisms, having strong problem-solving skills is essential to doing well in chemistry. My lessons are therefore structured around solving problems, as I see it as the most effective way to learn chemistry. My approach to teaching is three-fold: my first goal is identifying where my student would like to improve. I will then quickly assess their current knowledge of the topic, and give a concise and easy to understand overview of the topic. I will then reinforce this knowledge by working with my student through relevant problems taken from chemistry textbooks, or from past exam papers from the student's course. These three stages in the teaching process ensure that my lessons are as productive and effective as possible.
